Het natuurgebied is ontstaan door vervening en maakt deel uit van de ecologische hoofdstructuur van Nederland en is Habitatrichtlijngebied. Veel van het gebied is in bezit van Staatsbosbeheer. Recreatie is in dit gebied beperkt. Foto John Gundlach.
