The Markermeer is located in the province of Lelystad and is part of the main Dutch water system of 700 km2. Due to the construction of the Afsluitdijk and the Houtribdijk, the lake was closed off by dikes. As a result, benthic life did not stand a chance and eventually disappeared, the water became suffocated by the silt and eventually became cloudy. The Marker Wadden is a newly reclaimed part of the motherland in the Markermeer, about four kilometers from the Houtribdijk or Markerwaarddijk. The aim is for the archipelago to contribute to the natural restoration of the Markermeer. It is also a new recreational destination, with a final area of 10,000 hectares. It is the largest nature project in Western Europe. The nature restoration project has recently become part of the new National Park "New Land". Natuurmonumenten and Rijkswaterstaat aim to create an ecological balance with the construction, and it also has a recreational function. The infrastructural project is being carried out by Baggerbedrijf Boskalis and the consultant for Natuurmonumenten within this project is Ingenieursbureau Royal HaskoningDHV. The bird paradise is an international showcase for hydraulic engineering in the Netherlands. If you want to find aerial photos in all available Marker Wadden, use zoeken beeldbank.
