Housing construction drum houses Schelvisch Hoofd Twiske West Amsterdam North
Oostzanerwerf, was annexed by the municipality of Amsterdam in 1966 in connection with the construction of the ring road around Amsterdam. Liesbeth van der Pol of DOK Architects created the design for a housing ensemble at the new construction site at Couhornerhoek 15 in Amsterdam North. She worked together with H. Hammink, M. Lette and C. Jonge Poerink and on behalf of the Municipality of Amsterdam and Housing Association Amsterdam-Zuid. The 212 social rental homes and apartments are located on Schelvisch Hoofd. In the courtyards on the northern island, five large single-family homes are positioned opposite each other in three terraced layers. The courtyard houses alternate with sheltered housing. The ground floor apartments are intended for the elderly. The parabolic roof shape of the courtyard houses is derived from the shape of the nearby noise barriers. Of the 18 sheltered homes, four homes are intended for the disabled. The apartment buildings each have seven homes with three floors and a garden. They are offset from each other so that each home has enough daylight and views. On the southern island there are 12 drum-shaped apartment buildings, each with seven five-room homes. They are all ground-level and have three floors and a garden. Contractor Construction Company N.J. de Nijs & Zonen carried out the construction. Construction period ran from 1991 - 1993.
