Extended Waal Bridge near Nijmegen
The I-Lent combination (Dura Vermeer and Ploegam) removes soil from the course of the future Spiegelwaal, a secondary channel of the Waal near Nijmegen. At the top left of the photo, soil is sucked away to the sand separation installation. It goes by ship to construction projects elsewhere in the Netherlands. To the right of the center of the photo, sand is being excavated and removed with tippers. The Extended Waal Bridge over the Spiegelwaal was built on dry land. But the side channel fills up with water. There is a threshold at the entrance to the channel, with culverts at different heights. Depending on the water level of the Waal, part of the river runs through the culverts or even over the dam. The Spiegelwaal is part of the 'Room for the Waal' project, which is intended to prevent flooding.
